At about 3 am last night my friend was walking home and at 16th and U, a white van pulled up and two guys jumped out, started beating him, and pulled him into the van. There were a number of people around because bars were just closing but no one could do anything. They drove him to a Wendy's on New York Avenue, beat him further, and took his wallet and watch before leaving him behind the Wendy's.

He is ok (no serious physical injury beyond cuts and bruises) but really shaken up. Has anyone heard of crime reports about similar things happening to others? It is mostly shocking because it happened in a well-lit, populated area when there were people out. I typically take cabs after a certain hour but I am sure he figured it wouldn't be a huge deal to walk down U Street.

How horrible.

No one in DC should walk anywhere alone at 3 am. Period.
