Anyone have a reliable and cheap house cleaning service or individual in the neighborhood that you'd recommend? If so, would you mind giving me an idea of pricing?

I saw the old post about this, with a reference to a discussion in the general section, but couldn't find that discussion. Thanks for any leads.

Did you ever find anyone? I'm looking too.

We did find somebody -- she's not local to the neighborhood, but we've been happy so far. It's a family company, run by a woman named Veronica. Her # is 202-437-9067. We pay $90/visit for a fairly comprehensive cleaning of a small 3-br house.

I ended up going with somoene else, not because of anything against Veronica... I had already been calling around and had a response from a woman that just fit my needs perfectly.

She's a bit pricey, but does such wonderful things like cleaning between my radiator slats, wipes the fridge shelves down and on spring days when I have my windows open will even wipe out and roughly cleans the sills!!! Love her!

PM me if you're interested.

Veronica was nice and came with 2 workers. But her price was almost 3x the amount we normally pay. She wanted $300 for the 2 level townhome and we had to use her bi-weekly. We thanked her and will be looking for someone else. Most people do our home for $120, but the people we use can't do it midweek anylonger.

Any other suggestions appreciated. We could use a cleaning before Friday when guests arrive.

Yikes!!! I thought I was paying a lot...clearly I am not! My lady will tailor her cleaning to your needs...she actually comes out ... looks at your home and gives an estimate. She comes with 2 helpers as well. I use her bi-weekly, have her skip cleaning my guest bedroom (no one is ever in it) and she has NEVER charged me for the occasional cleaning of my oven!

I pay $100 for a two-level townhome (very, very few nick nacks in the house)...

Her name is Alida and her cell number is 571-234-7092. Since I'm asked all the time...her English is great! No issues communicating at all.

Do me a favor and let her know Jennifer Golden referred you to her.

Thanks, and good luck!

Jenn

Here is a warning to those of you who are seeking out and using "cleaning ladies" as opposed to real cleaning companies.

Cleaning ladies are not registered businesses and therefore there is no paper trail.

They pay zero taxes. They carry no liability, workers comp or bonding insurance, which means that if they get hurt on your property, YOU are responsible for footing their bills.

Also, YOU are their employer since they are working directly for you, as opposed to working for a company (did you know that?) So if they ever get caught for not paying taxes, YOU will be in big trouble because it is YOUR responsibility to give them a 1099---as they are contracting for you. Don't believe it? Why do you think all the big political people who get caught with illegal workers in their homes get in trouble over the tax situation? This is serious.

What happens if they steal or break a valuable object in your home? Who will you call? They have no supervisor and since they are not a business, how exactly do you plan to track them?

More scary than any of the above is the following fact. What happens if they copy your key and give a copy to a criminal boyfriend? The boyfriend now has free access into your home as you lay asleep.

You would do well to pay a few extra bucks to hire a real, registered, legitimate cleaning company. Real companies have insurance. They do background checks. There is a paper trail. They have their employees' social security numbers. And so on.

You get what you pay for.

Which is why you do your due diligence...get and check references, get referrals from people who are happy with their "cleaning lady". I've had far and away more breakage and stealing from cleaning companies with little to no recourse than I have with a hard working individual who cares so very deeply for their job and has no big corporation to hide behind.

Take care of your employees, pay your taxes, follow the rules and your gut instincts and you'll be ok...

I would refer people back to my post. I know what I'm talking about. "Cleaning ladies" do not pay taxes. They leave no paper trail. Many of them are not even in this country legally.

Some folks won't learn until after the IRS comes after them or until a "cleaning lady" falls down their steps and wants to sue. If you have a real company behind you, the company takes responsibility.
